Every material, finish, lighting feature and furniture choice is carefully considered to create a particular feeling. Whether it’s a boutique hotel, restaurant, members’ club or café, the goal is usually the same: create an experience people want to return to.
But there’s one element that can completely change how a space is perceived, regardless of how good it looks.
Sound.
The challenge is that acoustics are often invisible when they’re working well. Guests rarely comment on them directly. Instead, they notice the symptoms when they’re not working.
The restaurant feels exhausting. The lobby feels chaotic. The bar is too loud to hold a conversation. The hotel room never quite feels relaxing.
In many cases, what guests are experiencing isn’t a design problem. It’s an acoustic one.
In fact, research shows that 8 out of 10 diners have reported leaving a restaurant, cafe or pub early because of the noise. A separate UK survey found that of those who left a venue because of noise, over 90% said they would not return.

Hospitality Is About Conversation
One thing many hospitality settings have in common is that conversation is central to the experience.
People meet for dinner. They catch up over coffee. They network in hotel lounges. They celebrate in bars and restaurants.
Yet many contemporary hospitality interiors feature exactly the materials that make conversation more difficult. Hard flooring, exposed soffits, large areas of glazing and minimal soft furnishings can create visually striking spaces, but they also increase the amount of sound reflected back into the room.
As occupancy increases, so does the noise level.
Guests naturally raise their voices to be heard, which causes others to do the same. Before long, the atmosphere shifts from lively to overwhelming.
This phenomenon is sometimes referred to as the Lombard Effect, and it’s one of the reasons restaurants can become significantly louder as they fill up, even without music levels changing.
The Best Hospitality Spaces Control Energy, Not Silence
A common misconception is that hospitality acoustics are about making spaces quieter.
In reality, most venues need energy.
A busy restaurant should feel different from a hotel lounge. A cocktail bar should feel different from a fine dining space. The goal isn’t to remove atmosphere but to shape it.
Good acoustic design allows a restaurant to feel vibrant without becoming stressful. It allows guests to enjoy the buzz of a space without having to compete with it.
This is where acoustics become a design tool rather than simply a technical consideration.

Different Spaces Need Different Experiences
One of the biggest acoustic challenges in hospitality is that a single venue often contains multiple environments.
A hotel may include reception areas, lounges, restaurants, bars, meeting rooms and guest bedrooms, all with completely different expectations around privacy, comfort and activity.
Yet acoustic strategies are sometimes approached as a single building wide solution.
The most successful projects recognise that each space requires its own acoustic character. The atmosphere that works in a lively social setting would feel completely out of place in a guest room designed for rest and recovery.
The question isn’t whether a space should be quiet or loud.
It’s whether the acoustic experience supports the purpose of the space.
Protecting the Design Intent
Perhaps the most overlooked aspect of hospitality acoustics is that they help protect everything else the designer has worked so hard to create.
Designers spend months refining layouts, selecting materials and curating guest experiences. Acoustics help ensure those decisions can actually be enjoyed.
Because when guests struggle to hear each other, feel overwhelmed by background noise or leave a space feeling mentally fatigued, they rarely blame the acoustics.
They simply feel that something wasn’t quite right.
The most successful hospitality projects understand that great guest experiences are shaped by more than what people see.
They’re shaped by how a space sounds, how it feels and how comfortably people can connect within it.
And that’s why great hospitality design sounds as good as it looks.
