Soundscaping: Designing How a Space Feels, Not Just How It Looks

May 26, 2026

When we talk about acoustics in the workplace, the conversation often focuses on reducing noise.

Absorption. Control. Minimising disruption.

And while those things are essential, they are only part of the story.

Because sound is not just something to remove. It is something to design.

This is where soundscaping comes in.

At its core, soundscaping is about shaping the acoustic experience of a space. Not just reducing unwanted noise, but thinking more intentionally about what people hear, how it changes throughout a space, and how it supports different ways of working.

It is a shift from asking “How do we make this quieter?” to “How should this space feel?”

Why sound matters more than we think

Sound has a direct impact on how we experience a space.

Too much noise can make it difficult to focus, increase stress and reduce productivity. But complete silence is not always the answer either. In many environments, a certain level of background sound can actually feel more comfortable and natural.

What matters is balance.

People need spaces where they can concentrate, but also spaces where collaboration and conversation feel easy. Without that balance, even the best designed environments can fall short.

From noise control to sound design

Traditionally, acoustics in workplace design has been about solving problems.

Reducing reverberation. Managing distractions. Meeting technical requirements.

Soundscaping takes this a step further.

It encourages designers to think about how different areas within a space should sound, and how those sound conditions support their purpose.

    • Quiet zones that support deep focus
    • Open areas that allow for energy and collaboration
    • Transition spaces that feel comfortable rather than abrupt

It is not about one solution across an entire space. It is about creating the right conditions in the right places.

Where acoustics fit in

As manufacturers of acoustic solutions, we see acoustics as a key enabler of soundscaping.

Before you can shape the sound of a space, you need to control it.

Acoustic products help manage reverberation, reduce unwanted noise and create the foundation for a more considered sound environment. They allow designers to define zones, improve clarity and make spaces feel more comfortable to use.

But they are not the whole story.

They are part of a wider design approach that considers layout, materials, behaviour and purpose.

Designing spaces that work for people

For interior designers and architects, soundscaping is another tool to create spaces that truly work.

It supports wellbeing, yes. But it also supports performance, communication and overall experience.

Because people do not just see a space.

They hear it. They feel it. They respond to it.

And when that experience is thoughtfully designed, it makes a real difference.

A more considered approach to calm

At AllSfar, we talk about Creating Calm.

Soundscaping is a natural extension of that idea.

It is not about removing sound entirely. It is about creating environments where sound supports the way people use a space, rather than working against it.

Because when sound is considered as part of the design from the beginning, spaces do not just look better.

They work better too.
