Designing for Wellbeing: Why Acoustic Comfort Matters More Than Ever

November 4, 2025

In today’s open, flexible workplaces, we often celebrate natural light, sleek furniture, and modern layouts but there’s another element that’s just as crucial to employee wellbeing and productivity that doesn't always get the attention it deserves: acoustic comfort.

The Hidden Impact of Noise

Unwanted noise isn’t just an annoyance it can have a real effect on how people feel and function at work. Constant background chatter, ringing phones, or even the hum of office equipment makes it difficult for employees to concentrate and think creatively. Over time, this low-level disruption chips away at focus, leading to frustration and fatigue.

Research from the University of California, Irvine found that it can take around 25 minutes to regain full focus after a distraction. In a busy open-plan office, those moments quickly add up, and the effects go well beyond lost concentration; it contributes to higher stress levels, lower mood, and increased mental fatigue, all of which can undermine wellbeing and job satisfaction.

According to the HSE, work-related stress, depression, and anxiety account for nearly half (46%) of all work-related ill health in the UK, with 55% of all working days lost linked to these conditions. Deloitte also estimates that poor mental health costs UK employers £51 billion a year, largely due to absenteeism and reduced productivity.

Noise may seem like a small detail, but it’s one of the biggest contributors to this daily stress load. Designing workplaces that actively reduce acoustic distractions through sound-absorbing materials, zoning, and quieter areas helps create calmer environments where people can think clearly, work productively, and feel genuinely supported.

Acoustic Comfort = Wellbeing + Productivity

Designing spaces with sound in mind is more than just a nice-to-have, it’s a wellbeing strategy. Thoughtfully placed acoustic panels, ceiling lattices, and other sound-absorbing solutions can transform a noisy office into a calm, focused environment. When people feel calmer and less distracted, they can think clearly, collaborate effectively, and perform at their best.

Investing in acoustic comfort doesn’t just make spaces feel nicer it makes them work better for the people using them. Employees leave meetings feeling more focused, everyone can get on with their tasks with less distractions, and overall workplace satisfaction improves.

Practical Steps for Acoustic-Friendly Design

Here are some practical steps you can take in the design process, to create spaces that people want to work in:

  1. Identify problem areas – Start by mapping out where noise travels. Open-plan desks, breakout zones, and communal areas often generate the most sound. Understanding these patterns early helps you design more balanced layouts.
  2. Use the right products – Ceiling lattices, wall panels, and acoustic screens can absorb sound where it matters most. Consider the scale of the space and choose materials that deliver both performance and visual appeal.
  3. Connect to nature – Natural elements have a calming influence and can improve acoustics too. Having elements such as acoustic planters, as well as natural colours and patterns.
  4. Create quiet areas – Introducing calm zones or recharge spaces gives people the option to step away from noise, reflect, or reset without overstimulation.
  5. Think beyond function – Acoustic solutions don’t just reduce noise; they can become part of your design story!

By putting acoustic comfort at the heart of your design decisions, you’re not just creating beautiful spaces you’re supporting wellbeing and productivity for everyone who uses them.
