Operating in 14 countries across four continents, the RATP Group is the world's third-largest urban transport operator. Every day, its 27,000 employees work to develop, operate, maintain, and modernise innovative public transport systems, thus meeting the mobility needs of the population.
A visit to the Parisian offices on Quai de la Rapée reveals that, in an open-plan workspace, employees complain of being constantly disturbed by telephone conversations. Indeed, in this call centre, with its relatively large number of employees working in close proximity, all conversations are audible from one workstation to another. The problem also affects the customer; at the other end of the line, they hear a very unpleasant background noise. The poor working conditions are reflected in the quality of listening and are detrimental to productivity.
An on-site acoustic study revealed that the acoustic problem did not stem from reverberation. Indeed, the measured values (Tr of 0.48s) already correspond to the “very high performance” level of the standard. However, we measured a relatively high ambient noise level in the open-plan office. A significant difference in ambient noise level with and without activity (a difference exceeding 24 dBA) exacerbates the intelligibility and distraction of conversations. The workstations, very close to one another, with initially ineffective partitions, provide no privacy and create a “Lombard effect.” In order to achieve a significant improvement in acoustic comfort for employees and thus a reduction in the average noise level in the space, noise demarcation is necessary.
We recommend acoustic solutions with Arc front and side screens, 60cm high, mounted independently on each height-adjustable desk.
